But the steering is vague and overall the chassis isn't as fluid and precise as more modern rivals. In many ways it feels the perfect size; big enough to be luxurious while small enough to be sporty. Making a small car as safe as a big 'un takes some doing and it's only when you look at some of the finer points of how Volvo have achieved this that you realise quite what this commitment means. Others entice buyers with a combination of European styling, handling and craftsmanship. But its wheels are pushed out toward the ends of the car, meaning the wheelbase is long enough to give the car stability and relaxed cruising at highway speeds.
The T6 R-Design adds more power, special styling, unique 18-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a rear spoiler, special interior trim, a sport steering wheel, sport seats and the contents of the Premium package. Vehicle Details True to the long-established school of Scandinavian design, the 2011 Volvo S40's interior is modern yet minimalistic. Along the center is another series of buttons for more audio and climate functions, including a telephone-like set of buttons for the audio presets. Put another way, I thought Volvos were dutifully practical family cars that weren't necessarily fun to drive. The car is on the slip road of a petrol station at a walking pace until an easily recognisable car on the motorway passes at the same level.
Those windows are drawn in, leaving room for another Volvo characteristic, pronounced shoulders. Other standards include fog lamps, eight-way power driver's seat, keyless remote entry, heated power mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels. One of the more interesting design elements of the two-door C30 is its glass hatch. And with this T5 it is all about extreme high speeds, Volvo-safety or not. Despite the great speed potential the S40 T5 looks like a typical business car.
When your 40 mile commute home includes 15 solid miles of bumper to bumper traffic, being able to just set the space between you and the car ahead and let the car do all the rest is about as valuable as having a chauffeur. It starts at just north of the Buick Regal Turbo and is handily the better car. The Platinum trim level adds a premium stereo, navigation system and satellite radio. The C30 is front-wheel drive. The only clue that it is a turbocharged engine comes in the form of a mild underbonnet whistle in the midrange and a slight mushiness to the accelerator pedal when you blip the throttle.
The glass rear hatch is a great style piece, but the opening is narrow and the cargo floor is high. The suspension is firm, and it doesn't absorb sudden jolts particularly well. This is my second Volvo and I will no doubt buy one more, but for now. Even more than that, you can feel the torque just keep climbing; in the stock T5, it peaks quickly at 1500 rpm and stays there to 5000 rpm; but in the Polestar version, it leaps another 10 percent to 1600 rpm and climbs to its peak at 3000 rpm, and that's what gives you the rush. The turbocharged five-cylinder engine provides 227 horsepower, and 236 pound-feet of torque all the way from 1500 to 5000 rpm. The car can get boomy over roads with coarse surfaces, which indicates to us that the C30 has fallen behind in noise suppression and insulation compared to Volvo's other, newer and more luxurious models.
However, a fold-flat front passenger seat and tumbling rear seat backs give the ageing Volvo's versatility a boost. The Volvo name is spelled out across the bottom of the glass in bold, bright letters. You can pitch that fella into corners pretty good and it stays composed - and as always the seats are great. Walkaround The Volvo C30 design is striking, particularly from the side. Despite this, with taller tyres and less torque steer to contend with, the 170bhp car feels a good deal more composed and unruffled than its slingshot sibling.
The T6 R-Design gets a more powerful version of the same engine good for 325 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The two-door body style makes getting into the backseat a bit of a hassle, but the rear seat is comfortable for two passengers. Kalix has a higher quality appearance than most cloth, fitting somewhere between regular cloth and leather. The upgrade is a 650-watt unit with 10 Dynaudio speakers and Sirius satellite radio with a six-month subscription. In this case however that is completely unnecessary. Vehicle Overview Volvo brought a dose of style to the premium hatchback segment with the introduction of the C30 a few years ago.
The S40 didn't feature but the V50 estate on which it is based finished a respectable 43rd. The C30 is a two-door hatchback, also called a three-door. From the front, it would be easy to mistake the C30 for a Volvo S40 or V50. I just left it as I didn't need the space. Volvo haven't skimped when it comes to safety and they claim that the S40 is as good to crash in as the flagship S80 saloon.
