The Boss 429 engine was based on a strengthened version of the production 429. The pistons are slipper skirt aluminum alloy, machined by a contour cam grinder. The Chrysler 426 used an extremely large block casting that dwarfed the earlier 392 Hemi. To keep the crankshaft happier at the top of the rev range, Ford added a special oil passage along the left side of the block to direct oil to the crank first, and then the cam and valve train. From 1966-71, Dodge stuffed their massive Hemi into the small E-Body platform and the 1970 Hemi 'Cuda is widely accepted as one of the most saught after of these. Visually, the Boss 429 sits lower than other 1969-70 SportsRoof Mustangs.

The crank was the 427 forged steel version that was cross-drilled at both the mains and rods.
