But things get better still. None more so than the Browser, which allows you - as in the Komplete Kontrol software - to narrow a sound search via keywords. Awesome because I can simply dial up the sound I want to use without having to know where it came from — and it will load the relevant instrument for me. You don't have to actually load or play the sounds. Eight major and minor variations are provided which you can change using the rotary encoder. The library supplies 175 phrases, mostly looped legato articulations, arpeggios, and ostinato patterns. When you import a drum loop, for instance, Flesh analyzes the audio, detects any transients, divides it into slices, and extracts transient curves from the slices by identifying low-, mid-, and high-frequency content.
The keybed is made by Fatar so the feel is precise, light and definitely 'synthesizer' but sturdy with a smoothly weighted touch allowing fast playing and accurate dynamics. However, Native have got around this by using an Instrument rack rather than a plug-in. What turns out to be the most help is the thumbnails of the products. You get a 25-note, 49-note and, on test here, the 61. You can swap between the different hardware for common features quite well. You also get twice as many Discovery Series libraries and three excellent Evolve libraries from Heavyocity.
I expect that helped optimize production and cost — they certainly feel more premium without lifting the price. Komplete Kontrol gets a similar overhaul. And this time it's got it right. The new corresponding models have the same pricing as the old. Komplete Kontrol definitely sits in the latter camp, and since its release in both software form and the S-Series keyboard range, it has set the bar, not just for controller keyboards but for the very way that music production software integrates with hardware.
So to summarise my summary. The custom-built upright instrument sampled for Una Corda has a single string for each of its 88 keys, as well as an open cabinet and a thin, ribless soundboard, resulting in an unusually pure and resonant tone. It feels like a pro level instrument and that feeling is enhanced as soon as you put your fingers on the keys. Combined with the arpeggiator you can get some quite interesting pattern changes as you fiddle with the modes. For me, none of these integration features matter. The cheapest combination then is the £429 S25 keyboard and then Komplete 10 for £429 Komplete Ultimate is now £849. And secondly the awesome Maschine software integration only being available if you own Maschine hardware.
Maschine was built with software and hardware designed in parallel. The pads on Maschine Mk3 are incredible. Not much else worked, mind… That is because, in order to get Komplete Kontrol totally off the ground, you will need to download software. Just as Form can convert pitched sounds to unpitched sounds, Flesh can impart pitch to drum loops and other unpitched sounds to generate melodies and harmonies automatically. The two share designs and hardware.
And that sort of highlights a missing piece of the preset puzzle. What does it matter if the sound comes from Absynth or Massive anyway? Every nuance has been meticulously studied to recreate the spirit of this legend in definitive detail. I need a keybed with a quiet, smooth action, wide enough to assign many zones without having to transpose octaves constantly. The plastic is matte and soft to the touch and the metal surfaces are brushed and literally cool. Now, Komplete Kontrol returns with a considerable list of enhancements, all driven by a focus on even deeper integration into your creative workflow.
Having said that, these 88 notes are weighted and seeing Light Guide across them in action in your studio is something else to behold. The Essentials collection is an entry-level version of the Symphony Series, which offers more versatility and much more content at greater expense. A rotary knob controls the type of chord, so effectively you can perform chord progressions by just hitting single keys and at the same time turning a knob. I would really like there to be a knob graphic rather than the data or as well as. It includes personal favourites Retro Machines, Monark and Massive, but there are some other choice titles here, including The Gentleman piano , Drumlab and Vintage Organs — a little bit actually quite a lot of everything to show off what the Komplete Kontrol 1.
Needless to say these go further than your typical pitch and mod wheels although you can do those and can be assigned to loads of other functions for live hands-on performance duties. In Harmonic Chord mode you can play chords based on any root note played in your chosen scale. When I switch to another track, the light guide doesn't change while the instrument I'm playing does. At their simplest these are faders allowing you to drag a finger up to the desired height but their use as a touch surface allows a player to tap at different points and toggle between extreme settings instantly in a way that a wheel could never accomplish. Types are types of instrument — piano, drums, synths, strings etc, whereas Modes are how they are played — arpeggiated, chord, long release etc.
